Allium karataviense 'Red Giant Star®' is a striking and special ornamental onion known for its large flower heads and surprising color variations. This selection originates in Uzbekistan, where botanists Dr. A. Seisums and V. Voronin discovered a spectacular form of Allium karataviense in the Angren River valley. This natural variant immediately stood out due to its exceptionally large flowers, which can reach a diameter of up to 30 centimeters. This makes this allium one of the most impressive varieties within the karataviense type.

The offered batch is propagated from seed, giving each plant its own unique character. The flowers vary in color from soft pink to deep rosy-red and purplish hues. The size of the flower heads also differs per plant, which creates a playful and natural effect in the garden. Although the name 'Red Giant Star®' might be somewhat unfortunate, a particularly beautiful display is created when multiple bulbs are planted close together in groups.

Flowering takes place in June and July. During this period, the large spherical flower heads appear above the broad, decorative foliage. The star-shaped flowers together form a richly filled flower head that attracts much attention in borders and ornamental gardens. Despite their striking appearance, the flowers are not fragrant. However, they do attract many bees and butterflies, thereby contributing to a lively and biodiverse garden environment.

Allium karataviense 'Red Giant Star®' grows best in a sunny location but also tolerates light partial shade. The bulbs are planted about 10 centimeters deep with a spacing of approximately 25 centimeters between them. This cultivar is less suitable for naturalizing, pot planting, or use as a cut flower, but it comes into its own beautifully in perennial borders and rock gardens. Thanks to its unique color variations, large flowers, and natural appearance, this is a striking ornamental onion that adds an exotic touch to any garden.
