The blue-green, glossy leaves are strap-shaped, about eight centimeters wide, and can grow up to thirty centimeters long. During flowering in June and July, the impressive flower stalks rise beautifully above the foliage. Allium giganteum brings structure, height, and elegance to the garden and combines excellently with perennials and ornamental grasses.
This special ornamental onion has been cultivated since 1883 and originates from Northeast Iran and Northwest Afghanistan, among other places. Thanks to its robust nature, it is highly resistant to deer and rodents. Moreover, the flowers attract plenty of bees and butterflies, contributing to a vibrant and biodiverse garden.
Allium giganteum thrives best in a sunny to partially shaded location in well-draining soil. Plant the bulbs at a depth of approximately 15 cm with a spacing of 15 to 25 cm between them. For a beautiful, full effect, about 20 bulbs per square meter are recommended.
In addition to its ornamental value, Allium giganteum is also highly suitable as a cut flower. The striking flower heads give bouquets a stylish and architectural appearance. An ideal choice for garden enthusiasts looking for height, elegance, and spectacular bloom.
