Allium cristophii is one of the most recognizable and beloved ornamental onions for the garden. This special species is also known as the Persia Star or star garlic, referring to both the spectacular flower shape and the plant's origin. The large, open flower heads consist of dozens of star-shaped florets in glossy violet-lilac with a beautiful silvery sheen. This creates a striking architectural effect that immediately draws attention in borders and natural plantings.
Allium cristophii flowers in June and July. The large flower heads appear to almost float above the foliage and combine beautifully with perennials and ornamental grasses. With a height of approximately 50 cm, this ornamental onion is ideal for use at the front or center of borders. The plant also looks excellent in pots and containers. Furthermore, thanks to its unique flower structure, Allium cristophii remains decorative for a long time, even after the flowers have finished blooming.
This ornamental onion grows best in a sunny to partially shaded location in well-drained soil. Plant the bulbs at a depth of approximately 12 cm with a spacing of 12 to 25 cm between them. For a rich flowering effect, plant approximately 30 bulbs per square meter. Allium cristophii is excellent for naturalizing and reliably returns to the garden year after year.
In addition to its decorative value, this Allium attracts plenty of bees and butterflies, contributing to a lively and biodiverse garden. At the same time, the plant is highly resistant to deer and rodents, making it very low-maintenance. Furthermore, the flowers can be used as cut flowers and are also particularly decorative in floral arrangements when dried.
Thanks to its unique star-shaped flowers, subtle silvery sheen, and vigorous growth, Allium cristophii is a real eye-catcher. It is not without reason that this ornamental onion has been awarded an AGM distinction for outstanding garden performance.
