Allium cernuum, also known as American garlic in the Netherlands, is a graceful perennial native to North America. This special allium was described as early as around 1800 and grows naturally in the Alleghany Mountains of Wyoming, but also occurs locally in Canada and Mexico. The plant is known for its elegant, nodding flower heads and long flowering period. From late May into August, the violet-pink to lilac-pink flowers appear on artfully curved flower stalks approximately 25 centimeters long. The round flower heads have a diameter of about five centimeters and consist of numerous hanging, spherical flowers with conspicuously protruding stamens. During flowering, the flower tips curl back, a characteristic to which the name “recurvatus” refers.
The plant forms compact clumps and reaches an average height of 35 to 40 centimeters. The narrow, linear leaves remain decorative for a long time and have a fresh green color. Furthermore, both the leaves and the flowers are edible. Allium cernuum is strongly fragrant and attracts many bees and other pollinators, making it an excellent bee plant for natural gardens.
This species grows best in a sunny location, but also tolerates somewhat wetter soil than many other ornamental onions. Virtually all soil types are suitable, provided the soil does not remain wet for extended periods. The plant requires normal watering, is not sensitive to wind, and is fully winter hardy. Due to its clump-forming and upright growth habit, Allium cernuum comes into its own beautifully in borders, prairie plantings, and natural gardens. Planting approximately nine plants per square meter ensures a rich flowering effect. Thanks to its long flowering period, graceful form, and robust character, this is a valuable and low-maintenance garden plant.
