Description

Allium cepa (Onion) Globo (1,000 seeds) – Giant sweet onion with excellent flavor.

The Allium cepa 'Globo' is an impressive giant onion primarily known for its exceptional size and delicious, sweet flavor. This mid-early vegetable onion of Hungarian origin is a real eye-catcher in the vegetable garden and a favorite among lovers of large, juicy onions. With this packet of 1,000 seeds, you have everything you need to achieve a generous and flavorful harvest.

Large onions with a mild, sweet flavor

The Globo onion immediately distinguishes itself by its size. When sown directly in open ground, the onions develop into impressive bulbs of approximately 300 to 400 grams. If you opt for early cultivation via pre-growing (from February), the onions can even grow into gigantic specimens of up to 1 kilogram each.

In addition to the size, the taste is also a major plus. The Globo onion has a mild and sweet character, making it ideal for raw consumption, such as in salads or on sandwiches. Even in hot dishes, this onion retains its mild flavor without becoming overpoweringly sharp.

Mid-early growth and reliable yield

Allium cepa 'Globo' is a mid-early onion with a growing season of approximately 120 to 130 days with direct sowing. This makes the variety relatively quick to harvest, while still allowing it sufficient time to develop its characteristic large size.

The harvest period runs from early August through September. During this period, the onions are fully ripened and ready to be harvested. Thanks to their good vigor and uniform bulb formation, you can count on a consistent yield.

Cultivation and sowing method

The Globo onion can be sown directly in open ground from March to April. Sow in rows with a distance of approximately 25 cm between rows and maintain a distance of about 15 cm between plants within the row. This wider planting distance is important because the onions need sufficient space to reach their large size.

For those wishing to achieve maximum size, pre-cultivation starting in February is recommended. By growing the plants early and planting them out later, you extend the growing season and give the onions the chance to fully develop into giant bulbs.

Ensure a sunny location and well-draining, nutritious soil. Watering regularly, especially during dry periods, supports even growth and prevents stress to the plant.

Limited shelf life

Although the Globo onion excels in taste and size, it is less suitable for long-term storage. This onion has a limited shelf life and is therefore best used shortly after harvest. This makes it ideal for fresh consumption in the summer and early autumn.

Other varieties are more suitable for long-term storage, but for immediate consumption and culinary applications, the Globo is an absolute winner.

Applications in the kitchen

Thanks to its mild and sweet taste, the Globo onion is particularly versatile. It is perfect for use in:

  • Fresh salads
  • Hamburgers and sandwiches
  • Grilled or fried dishes
  • Soups and stews

Due to their large size, a few onions are often sufficient for multiple dishes, making this variety extra practical.

Why choose Allium cepa 'Globo'?
